VENZONE
The Cathedral Sant’Andrea Apostolo was razed to the ground
by the earthquake in 1976 and was then entirely rebuilt, how
and where it once was; the restoration works lasted 15
years. Over 7000 stones have been recovered from the debris
and put back to their original place. Inside this Gothic,
one-nave building with transept and polygonal apses
illuminated by narrow windows, you will find the simple and
quiet atmosphere typical of the most ancient churches.
GEMONA
Architecture and sculpture are masterly combined in the
Gothic Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta, where the huge statue
of Saint Christopher has been sculpted in the facade: being
their patron saint, he is visible for all the wayfarers and
pilgrims passing by. Inside the cathedral we are startled by
the pillars which have been ruined and shifted during the
last earthquake. The stability of this building is ensured
by an invisible support structure made of steel and
reinforced concrete.. |
